Bad apple post

I can't think if a time when I was ever in a group project that had a bad apple. There's been times when certain people were of more use than others but I wouldn't say I have experienced a group project when someone is completely useless- or in other words a bad apple.

If I had to deal with a bad apple I might ask them to do a task that is simple and doesn't take much effort. This way, the bad apple will still be doing something so even tho they're the bad apple they can still contribute some how.

Group Project Story

Design 102.. quite possible the most time consuming and mind torturing class i've ever taken. At the beginning of the semester we started the class off with a group project- The eponymous doorway project.. (anyone in design knows exactly what i'm talking about) Four people per group and the teacher chose the groups. The project itself consists of creating a doorway for a space with given supplies. We could use wood, wood glue, twine and burlap, with just these few supplies you had to make a doorway. Although many design students hated this project and their group, I really like mine. We all worked well together and got along. We had one member that was more of the leader and he kept our group together and on task. Everyone in my group was very task oriented and we all had the same goal- to get an A. After the month long doorway project we succeed as a group and had created the best doorway in our class.

As dusk arises the local children gather in the middle of the court, the meeting place- It was almost dark enough for the night games to begin. The last shadows creeping there way as every minute passes. The fire flies begin to light up the night game arena like stars glistening in the sky, the street lamps struggle to flicker on as if they were in a deep rest from the hot summer day. The laughter from the night game kids echos throughout the neighborhood, their laughter continues to spread throughout the night until the darkness of the night brings their bedtime.

Personal Reaction blog #1

Today we decided on our final proposal and discussed what ideas everyone had. We wrote our final proposal and decided that we are going to try to make an impact on the trash clean up at local hang out spots- Ada Hayden and Peterson Pits more specifically.

Things we already do to promote change

One thing that I got into the habit of doing through my parents is to always recycle and reuse things until they can not be used anymore.

Another thing that I already do to promote change or help out others is volunteering. My mom is a special ed teacher in Minnesota and from time to time when I go home I'll help her out in her classroom.

Personal Misson Statement

I am committed to living life to the fullest and to contribute to society to make a difference. I believe strongly in finding a way to better our world and to stop wasting all its natural resources. I plan to take action by doing what I think is right, making decisions in life that I feel are necessary and purposeful.

Sociology and social change response

I found this article very interesting and insightful. It made me realize how lucky I am and blessed for what I have. I feel like no matter what we try to do society will never be accepting to all, there will always be people living in poverty and in unsuitable conditions. We have come to a point in the world that no matter what people do society won't conform, there will be the people that are willing to help out other countries and there will be the people that are not. Society has conformed to the way our world works now and it would take a lot to change that.

Silent Spring

Rachel Carson uses the three appeals to gain her readers interest. She begins Silent Spring with an emotional appeal which soon changes into a logical appeal. She uses logic and reasoning to back up her points. Silent Spring is effective because of the way Carson intermittently combined the appeals throughout her essay to give it structure and definition. By including many statistics and facts in her writing, Carson becomes more credible which helps her case.

A Thousand-MIle Walk to the Gulf

John Muir does not have any particular structure in A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf, he writes as if he were writing to himself. The passage is randomly put together so in a sense it backs up the idea that he was writing to himself. Muir does not use any clear transitioning statements which makes his essay choppy and difficult to follow. Along with the lack of structure, Muir is very opinionated in this passage so the essay is not appealing to all.

Industrial Tourism and the National Parks

The major theme of this piece is Abbey's viewpoint on national parks and the industrial tourism that takes place. Throughout the essay he stated clearly what his opinion was and what the benefits and pitfalls are to putting paved roads in national parks. The only minor theme that was apparent was when Abbey spoke about the three engineers at the very beginning of the essay. After stating their story he went on about why they are bad and need to be stopped.

some specific details that stood out in my mind while I read this passage was the authors choice to put specific poems in between certain passages. This breaks up the reading in a sense, gives the reader a chance to process what was read.
